Dear
Family,
We
will be writing our algebra test on Tuesday, May 31st. In order to study for this test, please
review the information below with your child.
Students will be given a 100s chart to help add and subtract. Please practise using this chart (page in
agenda) at home.
1.
Fact
families
Example: If the number family is 8 12 4,
the student should be able to show four equations using these numbers.
Answers: 8+4 =12, 4+8 =12 and 12–8
=4, 12–4 =8
2.
Simple
equations using addition and subtraction
Example:
20+5 = 25 and 18-3= 15
3.
Balancing
equations
Example:
3+5 = 10-____
Answer: 3+5
= 10-2
* Students
should practise solving side without blank first and writing answer above. They should then solve the missing number,
and again, write the answer above. This
will confirm whether the number is correct if both answers are the same. This is great practise for students to show
their work.
4.
Problem
solving
Example:
How would you use your knowledge of the family of operations to solve
the following problems: 12 +
_____ = 19 and 11 - _____ = 1
Strategy: Using the 100s chart
1.
Start
at the smaller number.
2.
Place
your finger on the product (the big number).
3.
Count
the number of spaces you need to move from the smaller number to the bigger
number to get your answer.
Thank you,
Mme. Hawley
